  1. I really liked Howie, he was a tuly great guy who rose to any occasion with grace, dignity, honour, and a malicious sense of humour. He could be absolutely relied upon to handle any task given with absolute discretion and competence.

  2. I owe quite a bit to Howie. He took me on board as Deputy Director of the Import Controls Division I after my stint at Breec in 1985. A year later he appointed me as Directo of Textile Division. He was a brilliant negotiator and tought me a great deal about the art of making a deal. He was a good bonvivant and shared a passion for food and good wines.I still remember fondly a trip to Lyon following a negotiation in Geneva. Chez Leon de Lyon was fantastic. We kept in touch regularly through the yrars having lunch and kibitzing about the curves that were thrown his way by the Ethics Counsellor's job. Ironically we last met in Church at the funeral of our Trade policy colleague Bill Dymond, who was also a former mentor. In both cases the good truly died too young.

  3. And a wonderful neighbour on Dunbarton, who delighted in visits from his grandchildren, and very much lived up to his 'gourmond' reputation. And, although I mostly knew him post retirement, the definition of a 'civil' servant!
